We are also non-smoking, calm, friendly people almost in our forties. I have an European passport (my greatrandfather was Portuguese) and my husband is an European resident, so no worries about long stays. We are experienced with animals - Leo was brought up with pets. We love cats and dogs and had a great time and Turkey and Greece making friends with the local felines (they are really friendly there).
